The Bodhrán (Bow-Rawn) Drum
The Irish word 'Bodhar' means deaf or haunting. The Bodhrán drum seems to have been derived from the Old Celtic War drum. There is evidence to suggest that the Bodhrán dum was first used as a battle drum during the Irish Revolution in 1603. It was played to announce the arrival of the enemy and to provide accompaniment for the pipers.
The Bodhrán is traditionally made from a round wooden frame with a goatskin stretched over it. Genuine goatskin has unique stretch properties. It is a natural 'live' material which expands and contracts slightly with changing temperatures, has an infinite variety of subtle 'veining' and its rich lustre becomes more beautiful with age.
The Bodhran is played with either the bare hand or a "tipper" or beater. There are dozens of varieties of beater, differing in length, weight, shape, and balance.
