The Lambeg Drum
The Lambeg drum is traditionally associated with Northern Ireland and in particular the Unionist traditions. Lambeg is an area near Lisburn, south west of Belfast and the name is said to have stuck because the first time the drum was played with "canes" was at Lambeg.
The Lambeg is a double sided drum measuring approximately 90 cm in diameter and 61 cm deep and weighing 16 - 18 kg. The shells are usually made from two 30 cm sheets of steam bent oak supported by a hoop on the inside. The drum heads are made using female goatskin this is because female goats tend to grow faster and the skin is thin and strong and without scars. The drum is made with thicker and a thinner head, the thicker head going to the more dominant hand of the player. The skin is orientated on the drum so that the spine of the goatskin is central. The spine line should run at right angles to the cane so that when played, the belly of the cane strikes the spine and the end whips onto the thinner flank of skin. The canes are made from Malacca cane.
The Lambeg is frequently played at 120db which is louder than a small aircraft taking off.
