How vellum style goat skin disks are made.
The raw goat skins are treated with salt for two weeks.
The salted skins are washed and placed in lime for a further two weeks to remove the hair.
Once the hair has been removed the skins are washed and then soaked in ammonium sulphate for softening.
The softened skins are soaked in a lime solution of 7 – 7.5%. for a PH level of 12 – 12.5%
The skins are washed with fresh water to ensure they are free of all debris and chemicals then cut into the required sized disks.
The cut skins are soaked in sodium carbonate to whiten.
The whitened disks are washed in fresh water and again soaked in ammonium sulphate. This makes them supple and ready for dying and stretching.
The disks are stretched and dried in the sun.
